Abseiling - Short Courses

What is Abseiling on Natural Surfaces?

Abseil - Natural Surface: to descend a vertical, natural cliff, by means of a rope threaded through a friction device, to aid in controlling the speed of descent, attached to a harness.

Natural Surfaces (rock cliffs) for Abseiling can provide a training or recreational activity that provides:

  • a natural environment that adds extra dimensions to the activity, e.g.:
  • exposure
  • anchoring considerations / selection
  • access an egress options
  • logistical and access considerations
  • higher environmental impacts
  • a higher abrasive environment to consumable equipment
  • greater public access
  • hazards and risks are heightened

What is the difference between single and multi-pitch?

In single pitch abseiling the descent would be no greater than one length of abseil rope. The participants access the top of the abseil and walk away from the bottom.

In multi-pitch abseiling the descent would be greater than one length of abseil rope and would require the leader to have a higher level of knowledge and skills to facilitate rope retrieval, anchoring and rescue options, if required. The participants access the top of the abseil, abseil to the bottom of that abseil, secure themselves at that location, retrieve the abseil rope (pull it down), re-rig the anchors and abseil again. 2 or more abseils in this manner is known a "multi-pitch" abseiling.
