Diploma of Outdoor Leadership

The Diploma of Outdoor Recreation provides the skills and knowledge for an individual to be competent in planning, implemenenting and evaluating outdoor recreation programs and activities across a range of activity areas which include complex and non-routine situations. Work would be undertaken autonomously with responsibility for management, leaderships of others and maintenance of resources. This would be performed in and for field locations with varied contexts requiring contignency planning.

 

Course Entry Requirement: 2yrs outdoor recreation Industry experience

Entry to this qualification by persons without prior outdoor recreation industry experience (minimum of 2 years) or formal qualifications in outdoor recreation is not recommended.

Examples of sufficient outdoor recreation skills and knowledge for entry into the qualification may include:

- Previous qualification: Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation, instruct skill set qualifications accross multiple activities

- Previous experience in the outdoor recreation industry (minimum of 2 years)

Blended Flexible Training

The course is delivered via our web-based on-line learning in conjunction with face-to-face training sessions in the field, a flexible blended learning environment.

The course content focuses on key skills that develop your knowledge so that you can successfully plan and deliver an outdoor recreation activity. This may include developing skills in risk management, navigation, weather interpretation, environment factors, health and safety, emergency response and overall planning skills in a wide range of work environments. These are all completed in the context of your selected activities and the online theory component of all courses

The face-to-face training and assessment is conducted in various locations throughout Australia and is based upon demand. The activity calendar is regularly updated, (every 3 months) to reflect current enrolments. The calendar is on-line allowing students to view and select their own training/ assessment session within their course time-frame.

 

Course Options and Career Opportunities

Outdoor Recreation Management: Learn the necessary techniques to instruct others, manage people and guide and/or instruct activities. The course prepares you for the demands of the outdoor recreation sector, focusing on a range of outdoor recreation activities at both guide and instruct levels. The course focuses around developing the capabilities required to plan and deliver outdoor recreation programs for a variety of clients. Specific skills developed in thre area of leadership, risk management, environmental consideration.

Our standard course has the following activity specialisation options; Abseiling, Bushwalking, Canoeing, Climbing, Equine Management, Mountain Biking, Sea Kayaking, Business Management, Community development, Disability, Youth Services and Youth Orientation.

Additional or Other Activities: Additional activities are available upon request. You would need to contact the office to discuss any alteration to our normal course structure. Other activity specialisations may incur additional fees. They are usually completed as a one-on-one training and assessment or may require specialised equipment to complete the necessary tasks for these activities.

 

Course Pre-Requisites & RPL and Credit Transfer

RPL and Credit Transfer

RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) and or Credit transfer is available and you must meet the criteria associated with this process. Regardless of the assessment pathway undertaken the pricing structure remains the same.

Enrolment Requirements

This course has the following enrolment requirement:

  • Aged 18 or over (industry driven requirement), HSC or mature background.
  • It is desirable that participants have the physical attributes to participate in adventurous physical activities.
  • Participants are responsible for their own travel arrangements and any associated costs to and from face-to-face training and assessment sessions.
  • Have access to a fully-functional computer/smart device loaded with a web-browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox) and appropriate software applications to read PDF files (e.g. Adobe), produce documents (e.g. Microsoft Word etc -note we work in Microsoft so you would need to have compatable applications)
  • Have access to a computer/smart device with reliable Internet access (ability to download and upload documentation from/to the College's online learning server)
  • Have a current valid email account for online learning and assessment communication and support;
  • Have a telephone and current valid telephone number for learning and assessment communication and support
  • Successfully complete all assessment tasks within the required timeframes.
